Thermo-electric Actuator (MEMS) Robust Design Optimization

Multi Objective Problem definition

mems01determine the optimized robust design geometric configuration of the Thermo-electric Actuator at Six Sigma level when subjected to a Multi-objective optimization, The objectives are:

  • Minimize Mass - to reduce the latency
  • Maximize Displacement - to maximize system performance
  • Minimize Standard Deviation - for robust design requirements
  • Minimize Stress&Temperature - to improve the operating conditions and avoid premature failures

Sobol DOE is created for the Statistical Analysis, Metamodel creation, and used to populate the initial design space
MOGA-II algorithm is used for optimization

Results from Optimization

  • In few hours modeFRONTIER tested 112 500 designs when metamodels were used, the same task would have taken days for a single operator
  • modeFRONTIER found the optimum design achieving a 49.7% performance improvement from the initial design
  • A Robust Design Configuration at Six Sigma level has been obtained
  • modeFRONTIER created an automatic procedure: once the parametric model is set, the optimizator will keep iterating it until it finds the best configurations
